here's a review by Larz42
My review:
James Dupree comes correct with a proper, very solid mix. The intro requires a bit of patience but not for long and has a smug confidence like the DJ knows he's about to really give it to you. The set picks up into some good head-bobbing housey funk with a clicky, techy feel. It's thumpy and bassline driven, but it doesn't stay there long. Some great crunchy synths are mixed over a little house beat, giving the german techno-electro crossover sound a nod. The synth melodies give way to some good dubby stuff... the kind where the hint of a melody is provided by carfeul attention to the tone of the drums. Nice stompy transition into some more melodic stuff in the middle, and the tight clicky high-hats open up a bit into a track that works well as a quintessential, if slightly progressive, floor mover. The energy stays big as some quick cut samples are brought back in, reminiscent of the stuff that made Picotto explode.
Throughout the mix I kept thinking "that sounds like..." but the playlist is some stuff I've never seen before. I hear similarities to artists with little in common, like Dave Ralph , Trentemøller, Sander K, Someone Else, and several others of my favorites, going between several styles, with a surprisingly natural flow. It doesn't stay the same long but none of the transitions seem forced and the mixing is seamless.
Overall I think this mix is very, very good. It's a nice blend of forward-thinking, challenging tracks interspersed with more accessible, classic sounding crowd pleasers. It's not too dark and scary but it doesn't ever get cheesey, cliche or overly dramatic either. It's also reducing my iRiver's capacity, because I can tell this is going to stay in my player for a long time.
Nicely done, Mr. Dupree
