Frankie Bones (East Music Group, System Recordings, Ecler DJ Equipment, Skullcandy) LA, NYC

THE SOUND OF THE BROOKLYN UNDERGROUND...DJ FRANKIE BONES. It really only makes sense that DJ Culture was going to become as big as it has in these past years. Between the amount of information found on the internet, as well as computers giving anyone the freedom to create their own personalized playlists, the world is full of people calling themselves DJ's. But here is where the art fell apart... The network which once existed between word of mouth and the streets.

"I have had to play directly after people like Sasha, Carl Cox, Bad Boy Bill, Aphex Twin, Grandmaster Flash, Jam Master Jay, Christopher Lawrence, Jeff Mills, Richie Hawtin, Roc Raida, Q-Bert, Afrika Bambaataa, Tony Touch, Daft Punk, Dubtribe, DJ Funk, Derrick Carter, DJ Icey, Donald Glaude, David Morales, Moby, Deep Dish, Josh Wink, Sandra Collins, Armand Van Helden, DJ Sneak, DJ Rush, Tiga, Micro, Hardkiss, Gang Starr, KRS-One, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Biz Markie, Surgeon, Omar Santana, Ron D. Core, Lenny Dee, Rob Gee, Woody McBride, Paul Birken. Did I drop enough names here?"

"It does not matter if you play Hip Hop, do a live P.A., are a DMC battle winner, do mix-shows for MTV and Clear Channel, It does not make a difference to me. I am never upstaged and sometimes I take things into a different zone that nobody thought could ever be possible." "How, Bones?"

"First of all, I am a record collector right up to 2008. I enjoy playing vinyl and I know from experience. You can connect 1000 Saturday Nights to my first paying gig in 1985. The current club sound is the sonic electro-house which is all they talk about in Ibiza right now. Seems like Sven Vath & DJ Hell have been making other trance DJ's take notice. So it does not surprise me that Tiesto and Van Buren are even moving in this direction. The epic trance of the 90's is slowly being pushed aside for a more techy variation of club/house music."

Now years after the STORMraves, Frankie stands as an army of one in a war against commercialism. His weapon of choice is 2 Technics 1200s and his 12"s are his ammunition - committed to cutting the B.S. out of his music (when you take the B.S. out of B.O.N.E.S., what are you left with? - ONE). His latest CD, a mix of all original tracks, does just that. As true to his roots as ever, Bones, an astute philosopher and a true New Yorker, says, "I am an army of one, and if I call you son, realize I am just having fun. So salute a soldier and pay attention 'til my lesson is done. You may learn something."

Heather Heart (East Music Group, Under One Sky, Sonic Groove) Bay Area, CA
www.myspace.com/eastmusicgroup
Record labels, DJ's and fans alike would battle on the pages of UOS. "All the important record stores in England, Germany, Austria, Finland, Sweden, Holland, to name some, sold copies. The world was behind my effort.
"I mean this was when the scene first blossomed, just before all the politics came into play. When I interviewed "UR" in ' 91, it was so raw…" this was before Jeff Mills left UR, when Rob Hood used to MC for them. "At some of the first parties there were many young DJ's such as Woody Mc Bride, Barada and Kurt from Drop Bass who would drive from as far as Wisconsin to attend Storm Raves and relied on UOS for record listings. "I was every department, I was graphics, sales, advertising and printing, at first I wasn't making any money at all. I was doing it because there were people that would ride a motorcycle in the rain from New Hampshire to Brooklyn who couldn't live without it - New Hampshire later developed a very nice scene."

As a DJ Heather Heart traveled the world. "In, I think it was ' 93…" she recalls a party in London "climbing up a wrought iron ladder to the rooftops. The promoters were from India and had grown up in ashrams. The feel of the party was extraordinary - people were dancing on the roof and on the roofs surrounding us."

Heather is an underground superstar, I'd have been remiss not to ask her about "Better Living Through Circuitry" which I caught on Showtime one day at 3:00 in the afternoon. Imagine my surprise, flipping through channels and suddenly I see Heather Heart - "It was really quality music then, it's so diluted now – I mean there are 100 new records every week" she's saying outside her store on record row in the west village. "Better Living Through Circuitry was fun to do. I got to express my views on the scene and I got a lot of positive feedback, also they used a track I did with Adam as part of the film's soundtrack. I've heard that we (Sonic Groove) were mentioned in the directors cut, but I haven't seen that myself."

Christian Bruna (Camouflage) NYC
www.camonyc.com
A true native New Yorker, Christian was born, raised and educated in NYC. He got his start in the Rave scene at the early age of 16 in 1991. As one of the first street promoters of the infamous NASA parties, he helped kick start the beginning of a new era in dance music. With the earnings from promoting, he began building a record collection consisting of early Rave tunes.

In 1994 he also began DJ'ing, playing early Hardcore, Breakbeat, Techno, House and Jungle. In 1995 Christian quickly became a regular guest DJ at local Raves, Outlaw parties and premiere EDM club nights throughout NYC and the Tri-State area. Since then he has performed at countless parties from coast to coast and played for nearly every major promoter and club in NYC. His 11 year DJ'ing career has taken him to places such as; Alabama, Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, Dallas, Georgia, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Miami, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Washington D.C., Montreal etc, and has also DJ'ed in some of NYC's most legendary, now defunct clubs such as Limelight, Palladium, Save The Robots, Tunnel, Twilo, Vinyl, amongst others!

After several years of DJ'ing solo and with friend DJ Beau aka Raw Q, this Dynamic Duo formed 50/50 Productions in 1996. They turned their focus to pushing the Drum & Bass sound exclusively! In March of 1997 50/50 Productions initiated Camouflage, a new weekly Jungle/D&B party in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Camouflage quickly became one of NYC's premiere nights due to CB's undying passion to DJ and promote, as well as Beau's artistry as a DJ and graphic designer. As the man responsible for the inception of the Camouflage parties Christian has been a key figure in the development of the NYC Drum & Bass scene since the early days.

Spinning alongside such highly respected and talented artists as: Adam F, Aphrodite, Apx 1, A Sides, Big Bud, Crs?, Dara, DB, Decoder, Dieselboy, Dillinja, E-Sassin, Fabio, Fierce, DJ Flight, Freaky Flow & MC Flipside, Future Prophecies, Grooverider, Hive, J.Majik, J.Smooth, DJ Kane, Kaos, Karl K, Kenny Ken, Lemon D, Nico, Orion, Perfect Combination, Randall, R.A.W., Shy FX, Soul Slinger & TC Izlam, Stakka & Skynet, Tayla, Tee Bee, Total Science, Twisted Individual, and too many others to mention!

PUNISHER (Hej, Seismic, Klectik, Cryovac, Matrix) DETROIT, MI
www.hejrecords.com
Hailing from Detroit, Michelle Herrmann, a.k.a. techno legend – Punisher - is an uncompromising artist and a truly gifted producer. From her career's onset in 1993 at only 15 years old, Michelle has set a precedent of raising the bar high for all things Punisher through flawless productions and dance floor igniting dj and live PA sets.

Very early in Michelle’s career, it became apparent that simply djing would not be enough to contain her artistic creativity and prowess. In 1996 and 1997, within two years of her first turn on the tables, Punisher put out her first two twelve inch EPs on Detroit based label Matrix Records. Seeking to push forth the concepts of sound and motion, in 1998 Michelle and Mike Brickner, a.k.a. Cozmic Spore, launched the seminal Detroit label, Seismic Records. The label quickly gained much critical international respect with collaborations from many world renowned producers. Seismic has seen releases from the likes of the Advent, Bryan Zentz, and Andrei Morant in addition to collaborations with legendary Vapourspace producer Mark Gage. Through licensing by Dave Clarke, Bill Nasty and others, Seismic has become a strong international techno label.

Michelle’s musical creativity is currently being propelled into her newest undertaking - the founding of new label, Hej Records - with Matt Caputo (John Overfiend). Hej was founded with a vision: 'making a mark in the evolution of musical energy'. Hej’s premiere EP in 2007 entitled “Enter The Hej” by the Punisher herself, is a release emphasizing the energetic flavor of the label. The label will put forth an onslaught of both vinyl and net tracks from a wide range of International and Midwestern talent. Punisher's music has also landed her guest dj spots on several radio stations, including XM Satellite Radio. 2008 will culminate for Michelle with a steady flow of hot new tracks, including upcoming immediate releases and remixes for Hej, Klectik, Cryovac and more.

She has played all over the US and Canada, alongside DJ’s such as Qbert, Baby Anne, the X-ecutioners, Dopey and DJ Rap, to name a few. Annalyze has also toured with DJ’s such as “Breakbeat science’s “ own Reid speed & Playboys 50th anniversary DJ Shortee. Regularly rocking the club and party scene, crowds are not only mesmerized by Annalyze’s DMC scratching and turntable trickery, but by her energetic stage presence which creates a vibe that keeps the dancefloor moving all night long. The crowd-pleaser that she is, Annalyze can often be found stepping away from the turntables and joining the crowd in a dance! But in order to truly understand Annalyze, let’s take it back to the beginning, to her first residency in Rochester, New York at the legendary club Vibes. At Vibes, where she played mostly Breakbeats and House, her passion of music fueled her to explore different possibilities and to take DJing to the next level. And coincidentally in the fall of 2001, she became inspired by local scratch/turntablist DJ’s and realized that scratching was what she really wanted to learn. Two years later at the winter NAMM show 2003 she was able to showcase her skills.. Returning at winter NAMM 2004 & 2006 show, Annalyze played alongside fellow scratch mistress DJ Shortee (one half of the Atlanta-based duo Faust & Shortee).

Together, Annalyze and Shortee form the first female scratch duo called “Twice as Nice”. Both ladies are featured in two female DJ documentaries entitled “Girl" and “Vinyl is a Girl's Best Friend.” Annalyze is also featured in DJ Shortee’s new instructional DJ DVD entitled DJ shortees 202 . It doesn’t end there. Annalyze has also recently stepped into the studio where she’s been working on original material with the goal of releasing her first track by the january of 2006. She’s also been collaborating with other Breakbeat producers and has been sampling her scratches for use in their material. Annalyze was featured on Dj fixx's own "Bottom End Recordings" #20 & #31 . She is also doing cuts for other Bottom End Recordings , Afterdark Records & Next Level Recordings. Annalyze is also workin on a few hip hop collaborations with Eyeconz entertainment. Lea Luna (Tascam DJ Equipment, Skullcandy, East Music Group) Denver, CO
www.myspace.com/djlealuna
At the young age of 24, ear and eye-catching DJ Lea Luna has quite a handle on the club scene. She is a lifelong musician: playing keys for as far back as she can remember, and spinning records since she wasn't even of age to get into the clubs (in the underground rave heydey, 1999). When a 16 year old girl begins sharpening mixing skills and stacking up an arsenal of records and CDs that soon in her life, what potential does she already have in the club industry when she turns 21? DJ Lea Luna will tell you. She's already played all over the country at some of the most prestigious clubs and events the commercial electronic scene has.

Her remix sets and her 6-foot-blonde stage prowess handed her the rockstar nickname "bootlegs." Her crowd-shaking mix of big-room club, house, progressive, rock, and retro landed her in the DJ booths of clubs such as Avalon New York and B.E.D. Miami. Not only clubs took notice. She even rocked the stage with Ultra music fest favorite Kevens, as part of his show, and opened for music legends Steven Tyler and Chuck Berry. "After these past couple of years, I feel like I've reached a level in my artistry that measures up with the best, and I'm ready to own it. I recently added my first name to my former DJ name, DJ Luna. To me, the name Lea Luna symbolizes the final touch. I've completely embodied the artist I've always dreamed of being. I've become the real ME." ...and that she has.

Mikey Parkay (VisionaryMindz Recordings) Syracuse, NY
www.myspace.com/Mikeyparkay
Mikey Parkay's Journey began at the turn of the century during the pinnacle of the electronica boom in the United States. First, like most electronica orientated performers he was raised on the underground culture and grew up listening to many of whom are considered today's most prolific producer's and turntablists. Artists such as Paul van Dyk, Armand Van Helden, The Chemical brothers, Fat Boy Slim, Bad Boy Bill and many more of the United States hardest working entertainers.
After buying his first set of turntables in 2001 he worked diligently perfecting his mixing and learning how to manipulate music to create his own unique sound and persona behind the tables. By 2003 he was already frequenting many of New York's Hottest dance and night clubs including Residencies throughout the Upstate Ny scene. Over the next few years Parkay released several mix compilations and well received demo tapes that catipulted his career into bookings throughout the northeast in some of the biggest nightclubs and biggest festivals in places like New York City, Philly Pennsylvania, and as far North as Toronto.

I n 2006 with the help of a long time friend, Dose the alien, Parkay started up VisionaryMindz Recordings and productions. In just the first year of operation the label has grown into 7 releases, 4 very successful events, and a list of artists of which very well may change the face of electronica in years to come. Consistent bookings throughout the Northeast along with his new label and his efforts in the studio just beginning, Parkay is a name to look for in years to come..!

He has thrown over 30 events throughout the Northeast and Miami. With a team of 15 street promoters, 25 djs/performers, and heading up Northeast promotions for Ultra Music Festival for two yrs. now, there seems to be no end in sight.
With the companies move to Miami in early 2008, it hopes to grow to even greater heights. He is rapidly becoming "the dj you know" to party kids everywhere. With his quick mixing styles, dropping a sick mashup of breaks, dub step and hip hop vocals, throw in a bit of turntablism, and your hooked. Look out for Metaphysical's 5th release dropping @ WMC 08" "Its time to Break the Boundaries" Remember "Skys the Limit!"
