Apple Inc. tries to connect to my computer 24/7....

Post by josh wickham »

I have peerguardian and apple inc. tries to connect to my computer every 2-3 minutes. I think its just trying to update some kind of clock or something (or thats what they say at least). I have a problem with them, or anybody else connecting to my computer un-invited. Is it strange that I would want such a thing?

I called their corp office and got a call back from some guy feeding me a bunch of bullshit about how it could be any number of things trying to update blah blah blah. I told him I have a program installed that does a better job than apple's built in updater that I run when I want to update my shit...He wasn't getting the fact that I know whats going on, and somebody is leaving him in the dark about something.

How can I tell if all they're trying to do is just update some little stupid thing? How do I know they're not using this access to gather all sorts of free marketing information from my computer???

ps. this is the first problem I've had with apple in about 7 years so I don't want to hear it :) :) :)

this is odd to me for the same reason of not ONCE having an issue since i got my imac. i bit scary cus i dont use peerguardian therefore have no idea if this same thing is happening to me...if you allow it to connect does it update & go away or does it just continue with no apparent effect? posting the logs would be the way to go...maybe ask over at 'macrumors' but unless its standard they are gonna ask for your logs too...if you find out please post here as i like to be up on how my OS runs & if i need to have a 3rd party security service :)

Why can't you just disable all automatic updates like on microsoft o.s.? I'm not sure how apple OSx work? but this seems strange that thye would try to connect to your computer after having these things disabled. maybe i'm missing something.

I have a mac

If you don't have peerguardian you won't even know these companies are connecting to your computer...I get "us navy" "amazon.com" "SONY.com"...the list of companies (some located in india) trying to connect to my computer is crazy and CREEPY

The only reason I can think fo all these companies to try and connect to your personal computer is to gather marketing information for free...

the answer to 9 out of 10 questions is money.

I think what its doing is trying to update a clock of somekind...but who knows what kind of data it could be gathering while connected to my computer.

I have a program (I think its called Cnet) that updates, and finds updates for my computer better than Apple's software so yes, all my shit is up to date...Apple just won't stop taking stabs at my computer. Its happened 5 times while writing this just now.

It seems like an invasion of privacy. Its with out a doubt an incoming connection and not an out going on. I have "little Snitch" to prevent specific programs from ever communicating with the outside world via outgoing connection....

shits crazy, I was literally yelling at some dude from Apple who called me back trying to figure out the issue at hand.

I'm going to take my computer to an IT person, who can tell what info is being pulled from my computer. IMO if ANY personal data is taken from my computer with out my permission it seems to me, it would be called theft.

I'm trying in my personal thoughts, to understand why apple would want to stay connected to my computer ALL THE TIME. The only thing I can thing of is marketing and money...

Its VERY annoying when I'm trying to watch my movies and TV shows on my computer...Also the whole invasion of privacy thing, if thats whats going on

Seriously, post logs or even a packet capture from the outside.

Maybe its something initiated from the inside (and allowed) but its not allowed back in and being reported.

Could be as simple as browser caching.

Whatever it is, there's no way you can convince me that apple NEEDs to be connected to my computer 24 hours a day...It will happen when I have 0 applications running....

so peerguardian doesnt just block the apple connection permanently?

again, i would suggest the MacRumors forum or the PhoenixLabs forum, which makes the software...
